Love is the Message, The Message is Death (2016) stands out as a defining work of the last decade that uses collaged found and original footage set to Kanye West’s song “Ultralight Beam.” As relevant as Love is the Message, The Message is Death is to events today, it also points out the ongoing history of systemic violence against Black people in the United States—one that holds a foundational place in our nation’s history. Jafa intentionally placed this artwork in collections in cities across the United States and abroad where he believed it would resonate with particular force.

The artwork was acquired jointly by the Hirshhorn and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 2018.

This exhibition was presented from 3 July to 24 September, 2017.
