Unlocking the Colonial Archive through Artificial Intelligence

with Patricia Murrieta-Flores and Salma Mochtari

Participant(s)  Patricia Murrieta-Flores

Patricia Murrieta-Flores, historian and Co-Director of the Digital Humanities Centre at Lancaster University, speaks with Salma Mochtari, Research Manager at LUMA Arles. Focusing on the colonization of Mexico, she explores how artificial intelligence can help revisit colonial archives and recover voices that have long been overlooked.
The discussion also addresses societies that have experienced the loss of their world—such as Indigenous communities devastated by Spanish conquest and epidemics in the 16th century. Patricia Murrieta-Flores draws parallels with today’s ecological crisis, highlighting Indigenous narratives of survival and the strategies used to transmit healing knowledge and cultural memory.
