Hito Steyerl is a documentary filmmaker and author living in Berlin. Steyerl studied cinematography and documentary filmmaking at Academy of Visual Arts, Tokyo and Munich Academy of Television and Film.
She was awarded her PhD in philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 2003. Steyerl has published filmic and written essays centered around questions of globalization, urbanism, gender and social issues, racism, and nationalism.
In addition to solo exhibitions she took part in numerous international art shows and festivals, namely in Documenta 12 (2007), Shanghai Biennale (2008), and the 55th Venice Biennale 2013.
Steyerl currently serves as a professor for media arts at the University of Arts Berlin (UdK Berlin).
