Lina Alorabi

Lina Alorabi has been based in Cairo since late 2009, working to reveal ancient crafts, techniques and culture through design. Her work has been shown in international exhibitions such as the Milan Triennale and Dubai Design Week. Egypt’s wealth of history and craft inspired her to move back to her homeland after her education in the UK and work in Germany. Since then she’s been scouring Cairo’s alleys for hidden crafts excellence as well as working for diverse clients ranging from high-end to commercial. Whether from street culture, like the humble “afas” (palm frond vegetable crates), to alabaster shaped by expert craftsmen in Luxor; each of her projects takes a uniquely Egyptian source and reveals overlooked value without pastiche. She has designed products for clients such as: Don Tanani, Hanimex, UNIDO and AlexBank. Her work has been exhibited internationally at DMY Berlin, Dubai Design Week and the World Economic Forum. She has also been featured in Brownbook magazine and the Financial Times.
