Educational program

Since 2015, Luma Arles has been developing an educational program that animates ateliers for a young audience in schools in Arles, surrounding cultural centers and the Parc des Ateliers.

The educational projects cover a range of themes, such as architecture, design, and the environment, as well as more specific subjects that are related to the artistic program. This discovery of art, in all its forms, encourages students to develop their sensitivity and creativity in a playful and instructive way.

Each year, the students and their relatives gather at LUMA for an exhibition in Parc des Ateliers of the work they created during that year. This event highlights both the creations of the students and reflects on their experience of the program.

The first educational project developed by Luma Arles, "Architectures and Landscapes" takes place during the year in schools across Arles.

This Atelier is part of a program organized by the city of Arles and is realized in collaboration with FRÆME, a group based in Marseille that specializes in creating workshops for young people.

Since 2015, more than 1,000 students have participated in this project. Over the course of the year, they become budding architects and landscape designers.

After a visit to the Parc des Ateliers, several sessions of the program are conducted in class by mediators. To complement the content, educational tools are provided to the teachers and their students so that they can also work independently to develop an architectural and landscaping project that culminates, at the end of the course, with the creation of paper models.

In the skin of a designer

Since 2018, LUMA Arles has been offering the workshop titled "In the Skin of a Designer" as part of the extracurricular program of the city of Arles.

This atelier, centered around the theme of design, is presented in an original and cohesive format that echo’s the research protocols and experimentation conducted at Atelier LUMA.

This program, offered since 2018, titled "In the skin of a designer" is part of the extracurricular program of the city of Arles.

Through this project, the LUMA Arles tries offer to young people an insight into the designer's profession though the cycle of creative workshops. These workshops have been conceived to resonate with the research and experimentation carried out at the Atelier Luma.

Accompanied by designer Lucille Bouroullec, the young participants at the Arles cultural centers discover the process of manufacturing and a whole universe of different techniques and materials.

During a cycle of 6 sessions, held on Wednesdays, the children work together to design an original collection of thoughtful objects that question our identity, our relationships with others and our links to the environment.

"The Creative Classroom: Art in the Classroom! "Invites middle school students to design and produce a project around an artistic field, accompanied by an artist-intervenor with experience in that field.

This educational program is carried out in collaboration with FRAEME, a cultural operator based in Marseille, and is intended for secondary school students.

The program includes a visit to the Parc des Ateliers and twenty hours of workshop sessions conducted in class. The students and the artist-intervenor together work through the process from the reflection to the production to create a work collectively.

The objective of this project is to encourage students to develop an aesthetic judgment and artistic criticism skills through the process of experimentation, while emphasizing at the same time the idea of collective production and creation.

The project "Where is your place in Nature? Repositioning humans within biodiversity" invites students to consider more attentively the environment, the seasonal cycles, and the knowledge of plant species using, as a point of departure, a visit to the vegetable garden of the Chassagnette restaurant that is located at the heart of the Camargue and workshops at the Parc des Ateliers landscape park in Arles.

The project is divided into several sessions that take place throughout the year and aims to help children discover the life cycle of a plant from its beginning as a seed to its arrival on a plate. The workshop also aims to promote understanding of the seasonality of plants, fruits and vegetables and to develop the students’ skills in observing nature. Above all else the students are encouraged to discover and respect the environment and biodiversity of the Arles area.

The project is divided into several phases that include:

- interventions in class to develop essential knowledge of the subject of biodiversity.

- time spent in the gardens to discover the flora and fauna in the Chassagnette vegetable and in the landscaped park  of the Park des Ateliers created by the landscape architect Bas Smets

- tasting of seasonal fruits and vegetables during these sessions

Past Projects

In addition to the year-round educational projects, there are also spontaneous projects developed in connection with artistic program and events happening at Luma Arles.

From the thread to the parade/march

During the Gucci Cruise fashion show, held at the Alyscamps necropolis on May 30, 2018, LUMA Arles, working with with ANTI_FASHION and the city of Arles, organized educational workshops centered on the fashion industry

This project titled "du Fil au DéFILé" included participants from five schools, members of the public working in the social field and members of a training center. Through an educational tour, the 300 or so participants experienced the metamorphosis fabric, from a single thread to the finished garment.

LUMA promotion

As part of a three-year partnership (2017-2020), LUMA Arles sponsored the "Industrial Boilermaking Technician" class at the Lycée Professionnel Charles Privat in Arles.

The program, titled “Promotion LUMA”, offered students insight into the professional world through a series of immersive workshops.
