One weekend per month, from October to April, LUMA Arles offers a series of screenings followed by discussions at the Parc des Ateliers, with free admission upon reservation. Screenings specially designed for young audiences are part of the program.

These films will explore the relationships between humans and non-humans, interspecies relations, mythologies, and the natural world.

Focusing on a different theme each month, these sessions are part of a proposal that also includes exchanges with speakers, researchers, filmmakers, and the audience, on how these films contribute to changing our perceptions.

Free admission to screenings, upon reservation.

February Theme: The Tree

This session connects three perspectives on the forest. Sammy Baloji’s The Tree of Authenticity links colonial history to today’s ecological crisis, while Drouet’s The Time of Forests looks at the troubling industrialization of French forests. A children’s film, Mia and the Migoo, offers a more dreamlike take on the forest world.

The Tree of Authenticity by Sammy Baloji

Documentary | Democratic Republic of the Congo and Belgium | 2025 | 1h29
In French and Dutch (French subtitles)

In the heart of the Congolese forest, the remnants of the Yangambi INERA research station, once dedicated to tropical agriculture, reveal the weight of the colonial past and its ties to today’s climate change. Through the voices of Paul Panda Farnana and Abiron Beirnaert, two scientists who worked in Yangambi between 1910 and 1950, The Tree of Authenticity retraces the ecological destruction set in motion during Belgian colonization.

The Time of Forests by François-Xavier Drouet

France | 2018 | 1h43

Iconic of unspoiled Mother Nature, forests are going through an unrivalled phase of industrialisation: heavy machinery, single-crop farming, fertiliser and pesticides, a loss of traditional expertise. Forest management has been fast-tracked into intensive farming. Le Temps des forêts is a journey into the heart of industrial forestry and its alternatives. Lush forest or green desert? Today’s choices will shape tomorrow’s landscape.
