Interview with Colleen Doyle about David Armstrong

"I think that the people who were tasked with organizing the work, felt a new sense of urgency to get it back in front of the public.."

Director(s)  Victor & Simon

In this video, Colleen Doyle, lead archivist for artist David Armstrong, takes us into the world of a photographer who captured the spirit of a generation.

She explains how Armstrong turned his relationships, memories, and lived experience into intimate portraits. His work was also shaped by formative encounters—especially with Nan Goldin, his high school friend and a companion in his earliest photographic experiments, who inspired him and stood by him as he began.

Colleen Doyle describes how she organized David Armstrong’s archives so audiences could rediscover his work. She also highlights why it matters to make these images visible today: they are a record of an era, spanning 1970s Boston through New York in the 1980s and 1990s.
